The stories of their lives are brought to life at BallinStadt. Historical exhibits, multimedia stations, the backdrop of a bustling market in the New York of the 1920s, and much more will make this a breath-taking journey for visitors. « less

If you are from the US, this is like the prequel to Ellis Island. This was the last stop before people from all over Europe got on ships to make their homes in new lands. Nearly everything is in English and German. And there are displays, videos, things to listen to and touch. It would be a great place to... More

If any of your ancestors came over to the U.S. from central European, this is an extremely interesting museum. It takes you through the story, attempting to help you picture what it would have been like to emigrate during the 1800s and early 1900s. We have younger kids, and I consider this a good museum for kids. It's a good... More

We were there on Sunday afternoon. My husband's ancestors travelled from Hamburg to Australia. It was very interesting to see why and how people travel to other countries. The museum is well set up and most of displays were translated in English. You can search for shipping records, too. We had lunch there and food was quite good. More

This museum has a really interesting exhibition with lots in English (it's like the German 'Ellis Island'). More

The four surviving buildings (restored) tell the story of emigration from Hamburg, one of the most important embarkation points in all of Europe for emigrants to the USA and Canada. The exhibits are excellent, including texts in English and German, videos, mementoes, and (if you can figure out how to use it) connection to Ancestry.com so you can look up... More

As an American, I'm well aware of Ellis Island, but had no idea that a place like Ballin Stadt existed. This was the main location where European immigrants gathered and were given medical exams, etc before they boarded ships to the USA. Interpretive signage was sometimes available in English, but it was sporadic. Still, seeing the facilities and getting the... More

Very impressive for everybody who is interested in migration to the US/South America in the last centuries. Most examples are translated in English, also recommendable for English speaking people. I saw no translations to Spanish. The computers which support you in your search to your anchestors were all taken. Restaurant serves excellent dishes for reasonable prices. Came directly form the... From America, we visited family from my grandparents who lived near Hamburg. We all went to BallinStadt in September 2007. I think it opened in July 2007. It was very similar to Ellis Island in New York (New Jersey), but did not appear to be as large. Ample displays and large photographs--some explanations in English. Photographs truly said a 1000...
