It is stairs or a sloping walk up. No need to take the tram. It is good exercise and not that far. The views from above are incredible of the valleys below and of course Freiburg itself. You get a great view of their Altstadt.

There is a fantastic restaurant with prima food, service and veiew over Freiburg on the hill of Schlossberg. In summer you can also sit outside in the park and have a bear.

After you get off the cablecar there is no information about how to get to the top of the mountain. Watch out if you go the wrong way like me.

This small mountain is worth the climb. The views from the top are lovely. I am not in great shape, but I made the walk up without too much discomfort. (I wouldn't recommend the climb to anyone infirm--I'm overweight but otherwise healthy.) I did sit down and catch my breath at the top of the mountain before climbing the tower!...
