To transform and embellish the castle into a more welcoming home for the Anjou court, terraces and gardens were laid out, galleries built and the gateway erected. The star attraction within the walls of the Château d’Angers is the Tapestry of the Apocalypse or woven in 1375. With its 104 metres in length, it is the largest medieval tapestry anywhere in the world. Open:> 2nd May to 4th September: from 9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.> 5th September to 30th April: from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Last admission 45 minutes before closing time. This was my first time to visit a castle, and I was truly amazed at how gigantic it was! My friends and I were there to see the tapestries of the Apocalypse, where we spent nearly an hour marveling at these ancient pieces of art! I would recommend reading the Book of Apocalypse or a commentary on it prior to... More

After visiting Patmos last year where Saint John is credited with writing the book of Revelations It was a pleasant surprise to discover the Apocalypse Tapestry in the Angers Chateau The way the scenes are treated on the tapestry are according to Saint John The detail and the work that has gone into producing this large piece of cloth work... Visited this castle with family, teenagers and young kids. Everyone enjoyed it, room to run around , gardens are spectacular, people are helpful, the kids got n activity book to search for things around the castle, we all enjoyed doing this. It was very quiet this day. The tapestry wasn't as good as the bayeux one , in my opinion.... More

Wonderful castle. Our 2 year old was in his element running along the walls and in the grounds! Lovely gardens & surprising hanging exhibition. Would recommend for budding knights and princesses all around!

When we visited the Chateau at Angers I had never heard of the 'Tapestries of the Apocalypse'. They are housed in a specially converted section of the Chateau, which is very dimly lit in order to protect the tapestries which had become faded after over exposure in 1950s and 1960s. The tapestry is over 100m long and was continuous, however,... More

We visited the castle on Easter Monday. Our grandchildren loved it, especially the walk on the walls. We all enjoyed the Apocalypse trapestry which was an amazing piece of work. I think the tourism office of Angers should promote it more. The only negative was there was no where to get coffee or something to eat which we really needed... More

Although the walled fortress is impressive, but not so much as Chinon fortress, and is very extensive with a deep moat, what is really outstanding is the 14th century 100 metre tapestry, illustrating the Apocalypse. This alone is worth the entrance fee to a fortress that in itself has little to enchant you. Having enjoyed this tapestry, you must then... More

Beautiful castle with plenty to see inside - including an ancient tapestry, interesting gardens, a church (with strange modern exhibit, which was totally out of place) and fantastic views. It was very dark in the room where the tapestry was shown, but eyes became used to the dark, and you could see the intricate detail. It is well worth watching... More

The castle itself is nice, but the highlight is unquestionably the Apocalypse Tapestries. It is huge, 338 ft x almost 15 ft. Woven in the 14th century, it tells the story, in a series of panels, of the fight between God and Satan as recounted by St John in the Book of Revelation. The craftsmanship of tapestry is amazing. The... More
