To transform and embellish the castle into a more welcoming home for the Anjou court, terraces and gardens were laid out, galleries built and the gateway erected. The star attraction within the walls of the Château d’Angers is the Tapestry of the Apocalypse or woven in 1375. With its 104 metres in length, it is the largest medieval tapestry anywhere in the world. Open:> 2nd May to 4th September: from 9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.> 5th September to 30th April: from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Last admission 45 minutes before closing time. Great attraction to go to. Good value at 6.50 euro. Interesting castle. Spent about 2 hours there. It's currently undergoing a big restoration project to the outside and inside they are rebuilding part following a fire in 2009. More

Loved the chateau anyway, but the Apocalypse tapestries put it over the top. Worth a trip to Angers to see them. Over 100 meters long and in a great purpose-made exhibition space. Get the English language audio guide (one of the least expensive in France) as it tells you what's going on in each panel. It's also a pretty good... More

This imposing multi-towered castle imposes itself on the river. As a medieval warfare fan I was intrigued to see how a drawbridge was kept in balance - just stand underneath it and look up! There is plenty to see, including the specially housed tapestries - your eyes soon get used to the subdued lighting. The old part of Angers is... More

This castle is a wonderful change from the newer Chateau in the Loire. You can wander all over the grounds, in the turrets and up onto a walk along the walls. The views are forever and your imagination can run wild. A great place for kids of all ages. Once done, you can visit the Tapestry of the Apocalypse. It... More

The towers of Angers used to be three times higher but the King of France felt threatened by the power the King of Anjou was amassing ordered all the towers cut down to a third of their size. Beautiful medieval tapesdtries on view. Nice gardens to stroll in. More

It is unbelievable to find such building in a very modern&young looking city. Go around, go inside, go on top and make a picture - what a flowers field, what a view. And it is in downtown, just a few steps from the main station. I can only say - MUST see!!! More

This huge castle, astride is riverside rock, has traditional walks around the ramparts & lovely gardens within & outside its walls. The amazing Revelation Tapestry is huge, restored to its former glory & housed in a modern, dimly-lit building (whose air-conditioning makes it a wonderful retreat on scorching days!) There is a guide-leaflet in excellent English & the interesting English... More

It lacks the ravishing beauty of the famous Loireschateaux (Azay- le -Rideau, Chenonceaux), but still has much to offer. My main reason was to see the Tapestry of the Apocalypse which is very well presented. No visit to Angers is complete without it. More
