We went here after reading the reviews of this museum and were not disappointed. The best feature after the displays was the use of the English speaking headphones. Was easy to use and follow especially helped with the children to interact in the whole experience. Easy walking distance from town and a great afternoon or morning adventure.

This museum is astounding: it was built on the very premises of a Roman villa (IInd century!) that was unearthed in the 1950s. What's amazing too is that all that is presented was found within 100 yards around the museum! Another great point is that the museum itself was imagined by one of France's leading architects, Jean Nouvel, who also... More

The building is a masterpiece of architecture/art, and the museum has achieved a marvellous integration of function, education and simple beauty for young and old. The visual representations on screens as you walk around the reclaimed ruins of this majestic house bring to life ancient Gallo-Roman society. A must visit.

Museum (building)is extremely well designed and is a work of art enclosing a major archaeological ruin. The very inexpensive (1Euro) audioguide was actually priceless in viewing the site. We are rather unusual obsessive museum visitors-but we did two and a half hours. The Museum is easy to find.Beyond the museum building there are a collection of easy to visit ruins.... More

Staying in Sarlat, you are supposed to visit the pretty villages around, and maybe a side excursion to Les Eyzies or Lascaux, but if you are interested in Roman times, the easy drive to Périgueux (1 hour +/-) is really worthy. They have made a big museum over the foundations of a roman house. There is a massive roman tower... More

A massive, modern, glass structure designed by Jean Nouvel built over the site of the preserved Roman remains of the Vesone Roman villa site. The museum is also home to many other finds from this period. A non French speaker may have difficulty understanding the information plaques alongside each exhibit as everything is in French only, but there is a... More

Located in a nice park setting with ruins outside including the Vesunna Tower you can walk about. The Museum itself is modern, well laid out and you can really get a picture of and appreciation for the Roman culture. Perfect 2 hour visit.

Well presented by aspects of life in the Roman time in Perigueux. Fascinating objects including real foot wear, grave sites, tools roof tiles. What a remarkable site.

We spent an interesting couple of hours at this museum. The ruins and artifacts on display are impressive and centre around a large villa complex. Sadly virtually nothing remains of the mosaic floors but you are able to get a good impression of the layout, see a well preserved hypocaust system and some remaining wall paintings. The models and illustrations... More
