If you've got a spare couple of hours then i'd recommend a visit to this museum. Although quite small there are some really nice exhibitions in this museum. The canal that is behind it is a nice walk too, also you can take a boat ride from the museum for free/small fee.

Nice area especially good on nice day to see the boats outside. Kids went on school trip. Had old Victorian classroom, church, chip shop, doctors, grocery etc. had a fancy dress area. Had a section with old hats were they could see themselves in mirrors. Had cafe. Toilets clean. Car parking outside. Small gift shop. Would say it takes around... More

I have two children aged 2.5 and 4yrs old and we love it here. They're both girls and they love the old little street that's been built with shops and a school, it captures their imagination and they play 'shop' and enjoy the little craft stations. We've not been in the café as we usually take a picnic and they... More

Some interesting things to see and great as it is mainly indoors so a good rainy day activity. There are a couple of areas the kids can dress up and make things which was great. Some of the models were a bit scary looking lol All in all worth a visit to get the kids out of the house for... More

I went alone with my 4 month old baby! Can't wait to take him when he's bigger!! Old street fab, very realistic I think! And dress up for the kids a great idea! I had a lovely time sat drinking tea at the cafe looking out onto the canal where we went for a little barge trip! All in all... More

This is quite well hidden, but luckily well signposted. There is free parking and the attraction is free to enter – great value. It’s not a massive venue, but the space has been used well. The museum is predominately based around early 19th century industrial life in Manchester. There are lots of exhibits randing from model villages to genuine machinery... More

The museum is full of great historical facts and artefacts. Quite a lot to see and an added bonus of canal walks. The cafe there is very reasonably priced and the food / service excellent. Great for kids big and small.

Probably because this is a local museum, out expectations of it were not high. So we were very pleasantly surprised at just how interesting, varied and well presented the Portland Basin Museum is. There were enough intriguing exhibits to keep us fascinated for over an hour, and we got a real feel for what life had been like in our home... More

It's not particularly big so don't go thinking you can spend the day - MOSI, it certainly is not! However it's somewhere a bit different to spend a morning and its free parking as well as free entry so you really can't grumble. It's very well kept and there are plenty of displays that the children can touch and get... More
