My husband and I visited Carrowkeel as our first stop in County Sligo. I was so excited about visiting this and other megalithic sites and I was heavy laden with camera equipment as I trekked up the mountain. First of all, one you have allowed yourself in through the gate with your car, you will come to a misleading sign... More

l live in south Sligo but had never visited carrowkeel before we went yesterday and we where very impressed the walk up to the tombs is so lovely and quite and very scenic once we approached the tombs you really get a sense of being somewhere special.I was really surprised at how we could go in to some of the... Make sure you bring sturdy, waterproof hiking boots. This has to be one of my favorite sites not just in Co. Sligo, but in all of Ireland. Be prepared for a long (though not terribly difficult) hike up and and back down. The tombs and the views will be so worth it. The hike up is also very scenic itself.

This place is incredible. Older, apparently ,than Newgrange, it is a completely uncommercialised and in fact almost 'wild'. You will need sturdy shoes and water (and it being Ireland a rain coat) and it is unsuitable for children under 5. The beginning is a Hard track but the hill of course is rough and a typical mountain hike- not too steep... More

If you like hiking and a sense of adventure take this walk. One of the most beautiful sites you will visit in Ireland. On an October day it was just us and the sheep. Quite beautiful. Tombs are Magnificent. Boots are definately needed as the climb is very muddy. Well worth your time.

Make sure to drive up as far as you can to Carrowkeel as the walk is approx 2km on uneven ground. Not really suitable for young kids, in particular infants in buggies! There is a final climb up the side of Carrowkeel which wouldn't suit everyone.

The walk up to Carrowkeel can be either short or long depending on how you like it. There's a car park at the bottom or the top just below the megaliths, or you can take the long route in from the N4. The mounds themselves are spectacularly situated -- on a clear day you can see Donegal and Croagh Patrick... More

Heading out of castlebaldwin, A-road gives way to country road as the brown tourist signs direct us up ever narrow roads with stripes of grass up the middle. Th 6km drive to carrow keel is worth it as you climb up through a fabulous glacial valley towards the megalithic sites. Sligo seems to have many of these sites- each tall... More

As with other reviewers I found this site well worth the time and effort. However, as with many places of interest in Ireland, there is no information about the tombs or any of the archaeology that must have been undertaken in the past century or so. Why doesn't somebody in the Office of Public Works or Sligo County Council provide information?This... More

The Carrowkeel Cairns are without doubt one of Irelands best kept secrets. They are located near Castlebaldwin Co Sligo. When in Castlebaldwin follow the signs to find them. Directions are fairly poor, but when you get to the Cairns be prepared for an archaeological treat. They are situated at the top of hillside and command amazing views of the surrounding... More
