Visited this with the kids last year and although its quite good in parts couldn't help feeling it could be so much more if they put some effort into it. The Historical aspect and condition of the castle is great but it could improve on the displays/final finishes. Reasonable to visit but really they should look into improving it as... More

Spent nearly the whole day there and had a great time. Thought the mini cinemas were great idea for older kids and then the models and the tunnel great for younger kids, Gift shop great and also free, small museum right next door.

King Johns Castle is currently closed for renovations and is scheduled to re-open in the Spring of 2013. It is operated through the Shannon Heritage Group, which also runs Bunratty Castle. So, unfortuently, If was not able to go in and visit, but am hoping that the castle will be exceptional once the work is completed.

The visitor center built in one side of the castle does not respect the structure and history. The presentation of the castle and the history of Limerick including AV, audio, and placards were informative but wish they were more in detail. The best part was a current excavation area which is open to visitors to walk through on wooden platforms.... More

Limerick has a nice walk right along the river, and you can access both St. Mary's and King John's from the same street. It's a very nice walk to take and makes for great pics. As it was Christmas, we didn't get inside, but it still made for some nice shots.
