Home to over 100,000 seabirds in the summer, including internationally important populations of Guillemot, Razorbill and Great Skua. Small numbers of Puffin and Arctic Skua amongst other seabirds also nest. The island is also superb for botany and for spotting whales, dolphins, seals and the occasional otter. The scenery and geology is also fantastic. The reserve is owned by the Scourie Estate, and managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. There are few facilities on the island, just a small visitor shelter, composting toilet and shop. The reserve is reached by a ferry boat from Tarbet, near Scourie, and runs from 2nd April - 1st September. The ferry runs on demand Monday - Saturday from 9.30am, with the last boat out at 2pm. Returns available all day with the last one being at 5pm. Ferry charges £12.50 for adults, £5 for children (ages 5-14), under 5's are free. Please note, the ferry does not run on Sunday or in severe weather. « less

For birdwatchers this is a paradise off the NW coast of Scotland where you can watch the puffins and enjoy every second! Further north you can visit Clashnessie Beach and see it's unusual pink sand!

The Island features all sorts of seabirds. Unfortunately we missed the Puffins by a couple of weeks but there was still lots to see. The cliffs are breathtaking. The walking is easy and comfortable, signage is good. Good weather certainly helps as well. Plan for a full day and pack a lunch.

A beautiful island that was the home to 8 families until 1847. One of those families was the Ross family, my great-great-grandparents. The island still has ruins from thier crofts. The volunteers were excited to meet someone with family ties to the island and had a copy of the 1841 census brought over so we could find them. It was... More

We had a wonderful day out at Handa Island. Yes - I admit - the weather was amazing too and we enjoyed good views to the coast as well, but I can well imagine enjoying Handa even with a drizzle. The rangers gave us a good start providing a lot of information and being willing to answer all the questions.... More

On a recent cycling holiday in Scotland my husband and I picked up a brochure to Handa island and decided to visit there on the spur of the moment. Having never heard of it we had no expectations but liked the sound of the boat ride. The boat ride was great but even better was the walk around the island.... More

Take the small boat from tarbet to the island during the bird breeding season and you will witness one of natures most spectacular things. Hundreds of thousands of seabirds doing their thing. I absolutely love this place. Puffins, skuas, divers and many many more. The scenery is also amazing particularly the massive cliffs where many of the birds nest. Follow... More

Handa Island is so special because of its scenery, its beauty and the variety of birds you encounter. The scenery is wonderful, you can see for miles around, the cliffs are dramatic. Handa's beauty lies in how clean and tidy the Island is, that is in no small measure to the work the Scottish Wildlife Trust do. The variety of... More

Handa Island is situated off tne far north-west of Scotland and is reached by passenger ferry from the tiny settlement of Tarbet near Scourie. It is one of the best places in the UK for its profusion and variety of sea birds but wear a hat - neither great skuas nor terns welcome viewers very kindly! No dogs.
