This is a free small but well informed museum about the lives of ordinary people of Edinburgh. There were displays of rooms, kitchens bookbinders workshop, and even a jail. The guides are very informative and friendly. There is also some activities that children can get involved in. There is a small shop. A good couple of hours well spent More

the last time we visited there were 2 adults and 5 children. The museum is based in the old tolbooth and is an interesting building. There are a number of displays from different times in edinburghs history and while there is plenty to take up an adults time there is also enough visual stimulation for children without becoming too wearisome.... I stumbled on the People’s Story by chance on my way down to Holyrood and very much enjoyed visiting this free museum. It gives you a good sense of the living and working conditions of ordinary people in Edinburgh across the centuries and is an excellent introduction to the city. A little gem... More

This museum is free (although there is a tollbooth for donations) and is in a historic building which was once a prison (one of the cells is intact with “inmate”). It looks pretty small from the outside but there’s lots to see inside. It depicts the lives of Edinburgh residents from medieval times to the present day, some illustrated by... More

A cracking museum that takes a History from below perspective and does not ignore/trivialise the politics of the working classes in the past as most museums do. The display on the 1832 Reform Bill is very good as are the banners. The only downside is that the 'shop' could be better and sell a few more books for those who... More

'People's Story' on the Royal Mile ,close to the Canongate Church is a great little museum. It shows you every day history of Edinburgh and also brings back many memories of days gone by,particularly the industries that no longer exist in the City.It also shows the conditions that people lived in over the Centuries and has many interesting exhibits and... This museum was charming, maybe a bit boring for children. Not a great deal to see. If your time is limited I'd give this place a miss. More
