The venue is sponsored by The Journal newspaper, is owned by The Tyne Theatre and Opera House Preservation Trust, and is operated by SMG Europe, who also owns the nearby Metro Radio Arena and Playhouse Whitley Bay. The Theatre is a Grade I listed building with key elements of outstanding national importance including the lavish auditorium and wooden stage machinery. One of only about twenty-three Grade I listed theatres in Great Britain, the theatre is also one of only ten that date to the Victorian period. The Theatre originally opened as the Tyne Theatre and Opera House in 1867. It was built by William B Parnell and although the Theatre has had many changes over the years, externally the frontage remains much in its original 1867 condition. In 2004, SMG Europe took over management of the building and The Journal newspaper take sponsorship rights. The Journal Tyne Theatre has hosted many key performers over the years. Since SMG Europe took over in 2004, the Theatre has hosted performances from Elkie Brooks, Moscow State Circus, Steven Seagal, Natasha Bedingfield, Rufus Wainwright, Elvis Costello and The Imposters, Stewart Lee, Dennis Edwards, Peabo Bryson, Percy Sledge, The Temptations, Kevin Bridges, Dylan Moran, Britain’s Got Talent auditions, Sarah Millican and Ken Dodd. More recently, in 2010 the Theatre was one of only two venues in the UK selected personally by Coldplay to perform a charity concert in aid of homeless charity Crisis. « less
