The views of Horsethief Canyon from the lookout or the trails is breathtaking. Best of all, it's on the main road into Drumheller, so you don't have to go out of your way to see it.
There are a few small vendors stationed here too - some selling food and drink, others selling fossils, rocks and precious stones, etc.

The canyon is a few kilometers outside of Drumheller, but is an interesting stop. It gives a neat panoramic view of a (now) riverless canyon valley. There are washroom facilities, but I'm not sure it'd be a good stop for a picnic per say, as there was no trees and limited grass/shade. The area leading up the canyon is 'clinker'...

This is one of the most interesting areas we have in Canada, in my opinion. It looks like something from another era.

Fall is a great time to explore this canyon as there are few to no other hikers. Make sure you wear good climbing boots as there are some steep descents and ascents.

Great pic opportunity but don't forget to visit Horseshoe Canyon on the other side of Drum when you are inthe area. Cool badlands.

Having been to the Royal Tyrell Museum, it was like going on a "field trip". Easily missed but worth looking out for.

Horsethief canyon is a must see when visiting drumheller. the views are spectacular and it really is worth hiking down into the valley to explore. it can be quite hot in the middle of the day so take lots of water and wear lots of sunscreen!
