I'm from a family of history buffs, so I had to come here. It was quite remarkable, hauling up and down steep wooden staircases, trying to imagine ramparts and recreate how life must have been for those who originally built, lived and worked in it. It is hard to fathom how difficult it must have been, coping, surviving here, strangers... More

Port Royal NHS is definitely worth a stop. The reconstruction is super; you can wander through and interact with the different buildings - try sitting at the table and using the tankard or lying on the furs after a tough day; there are great places for pictures and you are left with a strong impression of what life might have... This is a reconstruction of the original Port Habitation. The original was built in 1605 by the company of Sieur de Mons and Samuel Champlain as a French fur-trading post. It is run and staffed by Parks Canada. My wife, adult daughter Meaghan and I, went to the site expecting to spend an hour or so and then go on... More

Don’t miss this one. This reconstruction of the original trading post and first settlement by French explorers in Canada is just so well done. This is one of Parks Canada’s historic sites and certainly one of the best. Its construction faithfully follows the plans left by Samuel de Champlain who arrived in Nova Scotia with Sieur de Mons in 1604... More

A worthwhile visit to see what life was life in the 1600's. This place gives you a wonderful sense of Nova Scotia/Canadian history at the same time Quebec City was being established.

Another historic attraction that is closed on Friday and Saturdays. We visited on a Friday. We were free to wander around the grounds but the it is impossible to see inside and we would have loved to go inside. What we saw was really interesting and we will likely go back sometime to view in its entirety.

My wife and I travelled to Nova Scotia primarily to learn about "New France." This was by far the best site we saw in Nova Scotia and one of the best we've ever seen. (And we've seen a lot, as we primarily travel for history). Although the original structures long ago were destroyed by the English and time, it has... More

This is an incredibly detailed and accurate representation of Port-Royal Habitation, built 1605, and a landmark in European exploration of North America. It's worth a visit for anyone remotely interested in history, or wishing to learn more about the area. It was really the beginning of European settlement in Nova Scotia, as well as the beginning of the French and... More

It's a recreation of the first Acadian settlement in the New World. In fact, founded in 1605, it was the first European settlement north of Florida, beating Jamestown, Virginia by two years. Why a recreation and not the real thing? Well, unfortunately, the settlement was burnt to the ground in 1613 by the Admiral of Virginia and a British invasion... More
