We visited severel ruin sites during our trip to Mexico for 27 days - and it is very easy to select the best experience - Calakmul !!
Because of it's position in the middle of the jungle, which makes you to do a bit of an effort to go there, it is almost empty..!! We had rented a car for...

The beauty of this place is beyond words. One has to see it to experience something wonderful and once having reached the top of the ruins you will never forget what you see and know you will be back. Surprisingly very few visitors which made it even more enjoyable.

We had been to Calakmul 6 years ago and thought it was great and decided to go back yesterday. It was as good as we remembered. I like these ruins better than any others that I have seen in Mexico - plus, there are virtually no people! The first time we went, we saw 6 other people on the entire...

We camped near the ruins and went there first thing. Huge pyramids. Not touristy. Hardly anyone there. Monkeys, birds and all. Low entrance fee. It is a long way though especially if you are not driving a circular tour of Yucatan.

Take the longer four hour time if you really want to enjoy everything. The ruins rising out of the jungle were breath-taking and awe-insipring. The wildlife, with monkeys, toucans, and birds was a great bonus. You can still climb the ruins which gives you a greater appreciation of the Mayan culture. The trails are maintained well for all physical abilities....

Calakmul is simply monumental. To visit Campeche and miss it...

Most tourists don't go to this remote ruin because it's pretty much located in the middle of nowhere and it's not an easy place to get to. I've visited this ruin 2 times in the past and have always enjoyed my time there. Structure 2 at the site is a massive pryramid and the whole site is covered with more...

I've been to over 20 Mayan sites throughout Mexico and this is one of my favorites. It's not easy to get to...you have to have a car or go on a tour. But that makes it even better as hardly anyone goes here.
In the 1930s, a tree scientist, looking for chiclet trees (source of chewing gum) was flying over...
