Lots of the underwater world exists right here in Leinster Bay, sea turtles, lots of tropical fish, coral. We snorkeled off to the right of the beach on an overcast day and it was great!

Bay is very pretty but was absolutely packed with people. We did not stay long as there are other beach options nearby that were far less crowded.
Our plan was to visit St. John for a day, go to the furthest beach and work our way back to Cruz Bay and stop at each bay along the way. After arriving in Cruz Bay we took a taxi ($18 for 2 of us) and he dropped us off where the road curves and by sign for Leinster Bay....

We were told that we had to stop there, it was a beautiful place and glad we did. One of the best places on the island. The color of the water was amazing, we took a ton of pics.
The ruins are small but still very interesting, so I would recommend you visit nonetheless. There are signs explaining the significance of each structure and providing some history and background of the entire plantation. The setting is gorgeous, a perfect place for some unique pictures and a little bit of exploring. This place gives you a sense of what the...

Contrary to the guide books, there are no deserted beaches on St. John. However, some require more work to get to than others, and are less used. This is one of those. You can make it in a sedan, but most use Jeeps. The snorkeling is above average, the beach is beautiful and the crowd is minimal.
Fun one mile hike.. some warn to have plenty of water and hiking shoes, etc.. But really, it is not that big of a deal. The beach right before Water Lemon is just so/so. We did not do Water lemon due to it being a strong current snorkel and hearing about 2 people dying there last year. But we took...

Loved the snorkeling and water. Would have liked to find more sand to hang out on. This beach required some hiking, so you'll need to take water and food if you need it. But because of the hike, it is not used as much. There were a lot of boats moored there however. Also there are ruins behind the beach.
Enjoyed the short walk over. Just a small beach but had room to throw down our sheet on the sand. Saw a turtle and a ray out in the water. Did not do Waterlemon as the Northern swells made water rougher than normal and this was my children's first snorkeling experience. Not as picturesque as other north shore beaches (Maho,...

My wife and I took some local advice and hiked around to the rocky-beach side of Leinster bay, where you can enter the water and swim about 100 yards offshore to snorkel along Waterlemon Cay. This was the best snorkeling we experienced in St John from a beach area(go by boat to get out to some even better spots), because...
