The vessel traded for years between Hispaniola and the Turks & Caicos Islands carrying such commodities as rum , beer, produce, plants and building materials. The ship has been refit as a charter vessel and now stays close to home in the sheltered waters of Grace Bay and the Caicos Cays of Turks and Caicos Islands. The S/V ATABEYRA is the perfect platform for learning hands on operation of traditional sailing craft, for exploring the exquisite undersea world and many islands that surround us or just lounging on her spacious, shaded decks. No vessel in the TCI charter fleet is as large or as versatile.Sun Charters and the ATABEYRA crew offer our guests a unique opportunity to get real sailing experience aboard the last of the tropical trading schooners. Being a gaff-rigged vessel carrying two headsails, there are lots of lines to pull, many sails to tend, and the skipper will even be happy to let you take the helm. Feel the past come alive as we sail through the uninhabited chain of Caicos Cays the same way it was done hundreds of years ago. The Cays were once the lair of the infamous lady pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Reid, and the waters and surrounding islands remain basically untouched since that time. The Crew of the Good Ship Atabeyra are proud that she is overwhelmingly the boat the residents choose when recreating in the Caicos Cays. « less

It’s not every day that a slice of heaven fall is your lap, but yesterday, May 15th 2013, was just such a day. Let me preface by saying that the tourism season here in TCI had been gruelling and I was exhausted. I’d gotten to the point where my ability to focus seemed nil. I mean, for heaven’s sake, I... Fantastic crew and very hospitable. The price was fair, boat was nice, rum punch and chips and salsa hit the spot. We would do it again.

I had a wonderful sunset cruise with Sun Charters. This is a must do when you come to Turks and Caicos. The rum punch was flowing and it was nice to go on a relaxing sail with other people who are either visiting or living on the island. It is very easy to book. I emailed them and then confirmed... Capt. Tibby and Junior....,you both made our snorkeling trip wonderful. You were delightfully engaging with us and the other passengers. Both are very knowledgeable about the areas we visited and the surrounding islands. This trip could not have been more perfect. The sun was shining and the trade winds were blowing nicely. The snorkeling was great...not too choppy of water.... More

We scheduled a sun set cruise before we got onto islands. We were delighted with the experience. Although we ended up only having a total of five on boat that night, they didn't cancel trip but took us happily on ride, and what a beautiful ride it was. The captain and crew were so very nice and had a lot... More

We did the sunset glow worm tour on Easter Sunday and did a full day sail a few days later. Both trips were great. Tibi and Junior were very friendly and a lot of fun to hang out with, and our kids had a blast raising the sails, steering the boat, etc. The snorkeling on the reef was fantastic, and... More

Had a great day with Tibby and Junior. The ocean is just so beautiful. Went snorkeling on a reef and up the coast to a great beach where we snorkeled and looked for sand dollars. Both Tibby and Junior were very friendly and informative. Definitely a must do.

This is a snorkeling trip, NOT a sailing trip. The sails never went up even though it was a perfectly breezy day. Defeats the point of seeking out a sailing trip when the whole thing happens under motor. There is no sign on the road directing you to the correct dock. The 'old' sign directs you to the wrong dock...... More

We did the sunset/glow worm tour the day after we arrived and it was awesome so we went back out on the Atabeyra on our last day here for the snorkel and beach tour. Everything was beautiful both times and Tibby and Junior were so courteous and friendly. We picked up some sandwiches at the Graceway Gourmet this morning and... More
