If you are thinking of a trip to Northland, this museum is a 'must' on your itinerary. You will need best part of a day to spend there. (Take a lunch break in the middle!) With full-sized displays, photos, furniture, working machinery and much more, it is a snapshot of life as it was in pioneering days. The special emphasis... More

No matter what your interests are, The Kauri Museum will be of special value. Of course the accent is on the use of Kauri, but this is exhibited in many forms . Starting with the growth of the trees, the historical felling and milling, right down to the end product whether it be furniture, boats, gum, or buildings. The gum... More

About two hours drive north of Auckland, this museum is a spectrum of life and development in the first 140 years after the settlement of New Zealand by European migrants. The exhibits were created primarily from local artifacts consisting of the machines, tools, living accomodations, and history of the first region in the country before the late 19th century gold... Initially we thought the $25 per person entrance fee was a bit steep, but there is just so much to see. IThe museum is very professionally laid out, and contains a huge amount of information about the kauri milling, and gum diggers, as well as just general New Zealand history. The furniture is stunning and the machinery very interesting. Some... More

There is a lot to see here. We particularly enjoyed that the mannequins were all designed to look like museum donors and volunteers. The amber/gum room in the basement was unnecessary, as we found it all to be slightly ugly and tacky. More

This amazing museum is the best I have seen. The displays are beautifully done especially the seperate rooms. So many of the exhibits have been donated which shows how much support they receive from the community. However long you have allowed for this attraction, double it. You will need a couple of hours at least. More

We stopped off here on part of our tour of NZ and enjoyed it. We got a quick intro from one of the staff about the Kauri trees, and then we were left to explore the museum. There are some great examples of furniture made from the wood, plus a lot about the history of some of the oldest trees,... More

This is more than a museum, it is history. There is so much to see and read and so many different rooms that we could have spent all day there. The entry fee is for the day so you can go out, have lunch and then go back in. There are other buildings there to look at and a really... More

We certainly needed more time there. I was not convinced when my husband mentioned the museum, and what a surprise. Excelent displays that transported me to a time I had so little understaing of. I suggest go and see the giant Kauri trees first, and then stop here with plenty of time to do justice to this excellent museum More

I initially balked at the $25 admission fee, however, as I continued through room after room and amazing, informative display after another, I realised that wow, value for money and well worth every cent and I would highly recommend this as a reminder of how resilient our ancestors were in colonising New Zealand (yes I a Kiwi) but also interesting...
