I have wanted to do this iconic trip since I was 10 years old ... it was well passed time to cross it off my list! Our 2 guides, Sarah & Jennifer, were terrific. The woman who gave us our instructions before starting off (sorry, I don't remember her name), was also quite wonderful. Yes, at times I had to... More

We decided to do the mule ride as another way to enjoy the grand canyon, it was a great experience having never ridden a mule before. The staff were excellent and you always felt very safe with 3 rangers accompanying you the whole way. When we arrived at the abyss we got some snacks while we took in the view... More

Highly recommended activity during your Grand Canyon visit! I have to admit I was nervous at the beginning but after about 5 minutes I was totally distracted by the amazing view. We descended the Bright Angel Trail and arrived at Phantom Ranch about 5.5 hrs later...stayed overnight at Phantom Ranch then ascended the South Kaibab Trail the next day (approx... More

I'm an experienced rider, whereas my friend has never been on a horseback. Before the tour she was positive that we would soon be galopping over the canyon edge and get killed. Luckily, the tour for the beginner-level was very safe. The mules walk within some meters distance from each other, and there is no way you would start galopping...... More

I did not want to go to the Grand Canyon without riding on the mules. We did not book far enough ahead to ride down into the canyon, so we chose to do the ride to the Abyss Overlook. You start at the mule barn, near the Bright Angel Lodge. They give you a quick briefing on riding, commands, etc.... More

Young children might enjoy this just because you are riding a mule but for my 21 and 18 y/o kids it was too much 'sameness'. All of the ride is in a forest with no views of the canyon at all. You stop at 'The Abyss' overlook over the canyon for 20 minutes. It is very pretty, but is also... More

We reserved this trip 13 months in advance but never realized what a strenous, physically demanding experience this would be. Xanterra is very well organized and of course we signed liability release forms the night before our trip. The trip down was 13.5 miles and 1 vertical mile from the top of Bright Angel Trail to Phantom Ranch where we... More

I didn't do my homework and didn't realize that the 3 hour trip no longer goes down into the canyon. I could have gotten my money back, but my teenagers were looking forward to the ride. As others have reviewed, you ride the mules through the woods to an overlook, and then ride back. It was pretty riding through the... More
