This place is amazing day or night, but moreso at night and with a full moon. This was our favorite place in the park, a must visit...perhaps twice! More

I expected more from what i had read. But, then again, if you have been in the Taklamakin desert it couldn't compare. Then again you can get a cold beer and bee in civilization in short order. More

If you want to go to a really nice place in Death Valley, away from the tourists, check out Eureka Dunes in the very north of the park. It's a dirt road to get there, but in March 2012 it was just graded and we made it fine in our Prius. There is a campground with picnic tables, fire pits... More

The Mesquite Dunes by Stovepipe are beautiful too, but the height (700') of the Eureka dunes is stunning. We hiked to the top (tough), then on the way back down triggered sand slides that made the incredible low humming sound these dunes are famous for. TIP: Protect your camera in a tight zip-lock bag! After exploring the Racetrack, I drove in pitch darkness to Eureka Dunes and camped there overnight. I was a little spooked out by being in an unfamiliar place, not knowing what creepy critters lingered in the shadows of my small flashlight and in the blackness beyond the beam.
