The most beautiful old forests I have encountered, gorgeous views, interesting variation, with the tors and tarns at the top, and the stunning coast and history. The lodges also surpassed expectation and were a welcome refuge at the end of the long days tramp.

The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is a 3 day loop walk that takes trampers along the south coast of New Zealand, up to the sub-alpine zone of the Hump Ridge, and over historic viaducts in the heart of native forest. Our two backcountry lodges are in superb locations, each offering a unique stopping point along the walk. We are the only walking track in Fiordland that offers upgrade facilities to independent trampers. Why not enjoy a hot shower and super king-sized bed on your tramp? You can also have your bag, or yourself, flown by helicopter. Each of our lodges have disabled facilities and wheelchair access to/from the helipad, ensuring that everyone can enjoy our wilderness. Very easy flat tramping from Rarakau to Port Craig then to Waitutu Lodge.We didnt walk the hard yards up to Okaka Hut but thats being planned for the future. Very friendly lodge managers. Port Craig very very interesting, full of history. Lucky we had great weather.If you are thinking about it, just do it!!!!

Walked the entire track in one go for the Hump Ridge fundraiser 'Stump the Hump' from midnight February 3. Participants were given 24 hours to walk the usually 3-day track.
It was an awesome experience and seems like it will be an annual event. Check it out around the same time next year!

I unfortunately have not tried the Hump Ridge, a couple of reasons.
Firstly I am not fit enough, and secondly I am too busy in my B&B caring for the, before and after parties, who have the stamina to do this walk. I promise one day I will do it as the reports that come back are amazing, the wilderness...
