Somoto canyon may be the premier natural feature in Nicaragua. Miles of canyon creek that runs from a trickle to a rushing torrent, walls of water smoothed rock that turn to jagged towering cliffs, and rounded bolders throwing up whitewater the entire duration. You can gently float or tube during most of the dry or shoot the rapids at breakneck... More

It was just our family (two adults, two young children) and our local guide who was excellent. We started the canyon tour first thing in the morning (8:00 am) on Christmas Day so we had the place to ourselves until the very end. Tour included a very delicious lunch at a private house. In the afternoon, we arranged for a... More

Somoto canyon was fun and it's quite interesting but I wouldn't travel all the way there just to see it. I live in Northern California and we have much more impressive and beautiful landscapes to see. That said, our guide (Ramon) was great (he's listed in the LP guide) and the canyon is pretty cool. I'm in good shape but... More

We set up a tour with a local family. The tour just had a small group of us (three) led by Henry. We hiked into the canyon then waded, swam and cliff jumped down the river. It was a beautiful place and I would highly recommend Henry's tours. He is a pretty fun guy. (I don't know any more information... More

Spend a few days in Somoto to experience the Somot Canyon, but the region has also to offer many other attracions. There are different bakerys which can be visited which produce the traditional Rosquillas. I stayed near the canyon in a friendly & family runned accommodation.

perhaps I am a little jaded by my trips through the grand canyon and the many river canyons in the Canadian Rockies, but I did find this a little underwhelming and not worth the drive from leon. It was quite beautiful tho and the swim was excellent. our guides, were local farmers and it was a great pleasure to spend... More

a not to miss experience in northern Nicaragua! I was afraid the water would be too cold and it would be too hard for us but it wasn't. We are a couple in our 60s and we were with 2 girls in their 20s but we were all in the same bracket. The water was warm for us folks from... More

The Somoto Canyon is a fairly new attraction in Nicaragua. Beause of this, not many tourist offices truly know about what the tour involves. It is a pretty physically challenging tour as you have to hike and swim for about 7-8 kilometers. At times the river was deep enough to swim or float but other times you are walking on... More

Somoto is in the department of Madriz - about an hour and a half north of the city of Esteli. It is a little-known area and not very touristy. The main things to do here are the: 1) Somoto Canyon - beautiful and very worth it! 2) Visit a Rosquilla bakery. These are cornbread/cheese crackers, sometimes made with sugar and... More
