When went there, after reading many reveiws from trip advisor, I think our thoughts were not really expecting what was to come! We had read that their monkeys had no fences and could move about freely. But didn't know you could be mere inches from them! The park was clean, the staff knowledgable and friendly!

Not having monkeys in our own country we really enjoyed this visit. Although there was hardly any snow and the monkeys were encouraged to stay around with the seed sprinkled around, it didn't matter. I would love to visit here during Winter as the monkeys were not interested in the hot springs. Amazing to visit none-the-less.

First and foremost, places like the Jigokudani Monkey park really show the difference between Japan and the USA. In the US, it would have cost 4 times as much and the monkeys would all be in the distance and behind protective glass. I have totally mixed feelings about this place. From one side, I loved the monkeys and the journey itself was quite interesting. You get quite close to these amazingly cute monkeys swimming in the hot springs. Highly recommended.

There are a few different ways to get to this monkey park. If you are staying in one of the ryokans in town, most will take you up to a carpark and from there, it is a pleasant few kilometers walk to the park. We really enjoyed our time at the monkey park once we got there, the only down side is its a very long walk to get there (aprox 3km from the main road, mainly uphill). We werent warned prior so it took us by surprise!
